My Review Of The Milwaukee 6509-22 Sawzall
Electric Reciprocating Saw

As
a keen user of power tools, combined with my love of writing no
frill reviews on the kit that I use, I decided that now was a
great time to really take a hard look at some of the
reciprocating saws that are currently on offer. I've used many
electric saws in my time, and always assumed that a saw was
just a saw.
I got
that completely wrong! Electric reciprocating saws have
more to them than meets
the eye, so I have taken some time to find what is arguably the
best electric saw on the market, for both the handyman and
tradie. This research looked at price, functionality,
specifications, customer reviews and finally led me to
the Milwaukee 6509-22
Sawzall 11 Amp Reciprocating Saw
Things To Consider when
Buying A Reciprocating Saw
When you start to look
at electric saws you soon start to realise that there are a few
essential things to bear in mind. These
are:
- Power - Amperage
for mains powered saws / Battery Voltage for Cordless
Models
- Comfort And
Maneuverability
- Speed - measured in
strokes per minute (SPM)
-
-
Variable speed is standard on most saw
models
- Weight
- Convenience, including:
-
- Tool-less
blade change
- Orbital/Oscillating
action
- Storage
Case
There
are of course other considerations, but these important factors
can help you choose between a quality product and one that will
fail you quickly. Buying the cheapest reciprocating saw you see
will get you into trouble on 'most'occasions. If you want a saw
for regular use, read on, and we'll take a look at how this
Milwaukee Sawzall can meet you needs. This review
provides much useful generic advice, but I will be explaining
how these tips apply to the Milwaukee 6509-22 Sawzall 11 Amp
saw.
How Many Amps Do You Really Need? Does Size
Really Matter?
One of the most important
factors in how effectively your reciprocating saw will work for
you is the power of the saw, expressed in amps. The low cost,
occasional use electric reciprocating saws can offer as low as
5 amps, with 15 amps being about the maximum on offer from top
end models (with a price tag to match).
10 amps is seen as the optimal
power for use in heavy duty commercial use, where the saw needs
to work under tough conditions. The great thing about the
corded drill is reliability of power, something you obviously
lose with the cordless models as the battery power begins to
drain.
This Milwaukee Sawzall saw is an
11 AMP model, offering you excellent power to meet the
toughest of tasks. This means that you can use the saw
confidently without the worry that it's next stroke may be
it's last.
Comfort,
Maneuverability, And Weight
The fact that you may be using
your saw in a variety of scenarios, laying on you back, bent
over double in a tight roof space, or under a vehicle, the
ability to work in comfort is very important. If you use the
saw overhead, weight becomes a major consideration. Cordless
saws obviously offer the ability to work without a cable
hindering you, but battery weight can make an otherwise light
saw design unwieldy, unless you are a gym junkie. A compact
design can be preferable in tight spaces, but for most work, a
corded model will be fine........and reliable.
This Sawzall model is durable
and super lightweight. It weighs JUST 7 pounds and offers the
best power to weight ratio in it's class. You're paying for a
top quality saw that won't leave you with a hernia!!
Speed
Speed is important. to allow
the blade to cut cleanly and clear the swarf/sawdust etc. As
mentioned, most reciprocating saws feature a variable speed
dial that allow you to work at very low speeds for delicate
work, through to high speed for safe, high speed cutting in
more robust materials.
The Milwaukee 6509-22 Sawzall
offers a variable speed of 0 - 2800 strokes per minute, with an
oscillating action and a 3/4 inch stroke length. The Quik-Loc
blade clamp makes for super fast, tool-less blade
changes.
